ERT Statement on outcomes of EU-China Trade and Investment consultations

Brussels, 14 October 2026: ERT welcomes the progress made in addressing key concerns in trade between the European Union and China, through a joint agreement to manage the surge in imports of hybrid- and plug-in hybrid vehicles, enhancing the export license scheme for rare earths and magnets and continuing efforts to reduce market access barriers and tariffs. These outcomes are positive and helpful for European and Chinese businesses.

While the progress is real and welcome, these are only first steps. Key European industries remain under pressure from recent surges in imports and broader imbalances in global markets. More will need to be done to ensure that Europe retains the industrial capabilities it needs for its long-term competitiveness and economic security. Europe must continue to strengthen its competitiveness and invest in innovation, while addressing legitimate economic security concerns and maintaining an open, fair and rules-based trading environment.
